About this role

LegalEagle is looking for an exceptional lawyer, legal writer, and researcher to become the Head Writer for the largest legal education channel in the world.

We are looking for someone who knows how to dig into a complicated legal issue, master the facts and law quickly, identify what actually matters, find and verify the best sources, and explain the issue clearly and persuasively.  Generally, we're looking for someone who just loves law, pop culture, and interesting/novel/terrifying legal issues.

We are a YouTube channel that writes mini law review articles at the pace of a network newsroom.

You might be:

A BigLaw associate looking for something more interesting and sustainable.
A former government lawyer hoping to use your skills to amplify the most important legal issues of the day .
A judicial clerk, legal academic, or experienced legal journalist who loves research and writing.
A practicing attorney who still enjoys the intellectual part of being a lawyer but would happily leave behind most of the rest.

The compensation ($110,000 - $130,000) may not compete with BigLaw compensation. But, in exchange, the work is considerably more humane, unusually varied, highly creative, seen by millions of people, and fun as hell.  Basically, ever heard about some crazy legal story in the news and wanted to know “if that’s legal”?  Well this is the job to find out.

What You’ll Do

The Head Writer will help lead LegalEagle’s editorial and legal research operation.

You will:

  • Research and write long-form LegalEagle scripts on major cases, constitutional issues, stupid TV shows where Kim Kardashian pretends to be a real lawyer, criminal trials, Supreme Court decisions, government actions, internet memes, and other breaking legal news.
  • Turn dense cases, statutes, filings, regulations, and factual records into clear and compelling narratives for a general audience.
  • Conduct rigorous primary-source legal research and ensure that every important factual and legal proposition is properly supported.
  • Work directly with Devin and our editorial team to develop arguments, structure stories, sharpen analysis, and make scripts both accurate and entertaining.
  • Review and edit work from other writers and researchers.
  • Help establish and enforce research, citation, sourcing, and editorial standards across the writing team.
  • Move quickly without sacrificing accuracy when major legal stories break.
  • Help develop new formats, recurring series, and ambitious long-form projects

What We’re Looking For
The most important qualification is simple: you must be an excellent legal researcher and writer.

Strong candidates will have:

  • A J.D. and substantial professional legal experience.
  • Exceptional legal research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent legal writing and editing ability, including the ability to explain complicated legal concepts clearly without making them inaccurate.
  • Strong judgment about sources and an instinct for identifying unsupported or overstated claims.
  • Experience working with primary sources, including cases, statutes, regulations, court filings, and government documents.
  • Intellectual curiosity across a wide range of legal subjects.
  • Strong interest in current events.
  • The ability to work quickly and independently.
  • Excellent editorial judgment.
  • A great sense of humor.
  • Experience in litigation, appellate practice, government, judicial clerkships, investigations, constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law, or complex legal journalism is particularly relevant.

Why This Role Is Different
You will get to use many of the best parts of sophisticated legal practice—research, analysis, writing, argument, and judgment—without much of what makes conventional legal practice exhausting.

The subject matter changes constantly. One week you may be analyzing a Supreme Court opinion; the next, reconstructing a criminal prosecution from the docket; the next, figuring out whether some extraordinary government action is actually lawful.  We did a five part series on a collection of stolen legos because that was the internet’s topic du jour that month.  You never know.

And instead of writing something that will be read by six partners and opposing counsel, your work will help millions of viewers understand an important legal issue.

We take accuracy extremely seriously, but we also want the work to be accessible, entertaining, occasionally funny, and genuinely enjoyable to produce. You can help.
