Job Description:
Join one of the Mid-Atlantic's leading employment law boutiques. Due to continued growth, including more than tripling in size over the past five years, Smithey Law Group LLC is expanding its litigation team and seeking exceptional attorneys across a range of experience levels. Smithey Law Group LLC is a Chambers USA Band 1-ranked employment law firm representing employers, executives, and employees throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Our collaborative culture has been recognized as one of Greater Baltimore's Best Places to Work and one of Anne Arundel County's Best Places to Work.
We have multiple attorney openings across our Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia offices. Our attorneys and firm have been recognized by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers, Lawdragon, and numerous regional publications for excellence in employment law. We value community engagement and encourage attorneys to participate in pro bono work, bar leadership, professional organizations, and community initiatives. We represent both employees and employers in sophisticated employment matters throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
We welcome applications from attorneys at a variety of experience levels, from those building their employment law careers to experienced litigators seeking greater responsibility and a collaborative boutique environment. The firm has more than tripled in size over the past five years and continues to grow.
Unlike many firms, our attorneys receive meaningful responsibility early in their careers. Depending on experience, attorneys manage client relationships, conduct depositions, appear in court, participate in mediations, develop litigation strategy, and prepare cases for trial with support from experienced colleagues.
We offer benefits not typically seen in firms our size, including generous health (multiple plan options), dental, and vision insurance options, unlimited paid vacation, paid sick leave and holidays, paid maternity and paternity leave, short-term and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, 401(k) matching with immediate vesting, a Continued Legal Education (CLE) budget for associate attorneys with credit available towards billable hours targets, and Employee Assistance Program (EAP), among other employee benefits. We also offer flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts with firm contributions. We also offer anniversary bonuses and periodic discretionary bonuses, which are dependent on multiple factors including meeting annual targets, client outcomes, contributions to firm success, and the broader success of the firm. We also offer a hybrid schedule, bar dues, employee award, holiday parties, team retreats, volunteer events, DEI initiatives, networking events, professional memberships, marketing/ business development support, dedicated administrative support, paralegal support, and business development opportunities. The firm provides laptops and smartphones with a generous policy on personal use of same. Partnership opportunities, including a path to equity and non-equity, are available. The firm also has coffee, snacks, and frequent catered lunches, breakfasts, and happy hours. We pride ourselves on maintaining a collaborative, supportive culture where attorneys work closely together, share ideas, mentor one another, and celebrate each other's successes. Attorneys work directly with experienced firm leadership on sophisticated matters rather than through multiple layers of management. Our attorneys regularly speak, publish, and hold leadership positions within the employment law community, providing exceptional opportunities for professional development and visibility.
Please Note: To apply for this position, candidates must have a Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an ABA-accredited law school or program.
Interested candidates should send a resume and writing sample. Cover letters describing the candidate’s interest in working with SLG and experience in employment law are optional but welcomed.
Requirements
The successful candidate will have strong litigation, writing, and client-relations skills. Employment law experience is strongly preferred but not required for candidates with exceptional civil litigation experience and a demonstrated ability to learn quickly. Responsibilities and compensation will be tailored to the candidate's experience level.
We are committed to developing long-term attorneys. Advancement opportunities include senior attorney, practice group leadership, supervisory roles, and partnership consideration based on performance and firm needs. Experienced attorneys will have opportunities to mentor junior attorneys, supervise litigation teams, develop client relationships, and help shape the continued growth of the firm.
